Baseball Continues in Marysville: Bryant Field now home to Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers.
Lon Hatimiya newest owner in group.
Friday, November 22, 2024
Christmas came today for local baseball fans, with reason for giving thanks a week early: The lease of Bryant Field was approved for the Pioneer League champion High Wheelers, which are wheeling in to begin local activities Dec. 1.
The team from Davis will become the Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers, a “year round team” according to Marysville officials.
With a December 1, start, Mayor Chris Branscum says a D Street property owner told him “They're looking for office space that has foot traffic so they can sell gear, sell tickets.”
The city will get fifty cents from each ticket sold. That will fund capital improvements.
That includes a video scoreboard that could cost up to $250,000. But the level of play is the big attraction.
Councilman Dom Belza says “The Pioneer League… is a Major League Baseball partner league. It has the major league baseball stamp on it. And so the caliber of baseball in Marysville has the opportunity to go to a whole new level and I'm excited about that.”
A number of Pioneer League players have moved to MLB teams.
Belza and Vice Mayor Bruce Buttacavoli worked with the team’s owners, who started the Oakland Ballers, anticipating the demise of the Oakland As.
The High Wheelers called Davis home for their first-ever season, playing at the UC Davis stadium. That’s where Davis resident, and native Marysville economist Lon Hatamiya first saw them. He saw a local opportunity and connected with the team owners. The High Wheelers announced this afternoon that Hatamiya is the newest member of the ownership group.
"I remember building bleachers at Bryant Park as an Eagle Scout when I was growing up in Marysville. It’s an honor to be welcoming a professional baseball team to my hometown! I am excited to join the team officially as the newest co-owner, Hatamiya said this afternoon.
The High Wheelers won the 2024 Pioneer League Championship this summer, playing against 11 other teams in California, Utah, Idaho and Montana. It’s a new team, with an inaugural season record of 58 wins, 44 losses.
Marysville staff says the team is “committed to being an active part of the Yuba-Sutter community, working with local businesses on concessions, providing free community activities, and organizing youth baseball workshops.”
Both the Ballers and High Wheelers are 2024 Pioneer League expansion teams.
The teams’ co-founder Bryan Carmel was excited after the City Council approval. "In Oakland, we developed a successful model of radical community participation. We are confident we can continue this in Marysville, while also staying nimble enough to consistently improve the player and fan experience. We can’t wait to see how our new Yuba-Sutter fans truly make the team their own."
Look for the first High Wheelers game at Bryant Field in late May, 2025, with the regular season ending August. Weeknight games will start at 6:35 PM, and weekend games at 1:05 PM.
The dozen Pioneer League teams play a 96-game season from May to mid-September.

HOTEL COMING DOWN! Timeline: E St./Hwy. 70 Open by Jan. 31.
Friday, November 22, 2024
Hotel Marysville is coming down, with Highway 70/E Street expected to be open by the end of January, 2025. That’s the result of Marysville City Council action taken in a special meeting Friday, November 22.
The demolition has two phases. First, the entire fire-ravaged hotel will be turned into a debris pile and streets reopened. Those include E Street (SR-70), 5th Street in front of the hotel, the High Street alley along the east side of the hotel, and restoring two-way traffic on Third Street.
The debris will become a covered pile within the footprint of the hotel property. Later, the debris pile removed as funding permits. Debris would go to a landfill designed to take environmentally hazardous waste.
That pile may sit there until the beginning of summer or longer. It’ll be late May before the City knows whether a federal Environmental Protection Agency grant has been obtained and can be used for removal. If there’s no grant in May, the City can re-apply in November, 2025.
There may be other funding for debris removal that the City can find, but none were identified in Friday’s special meeting. That’s when the demolition contract was awarded.
JM Environmental, Inc., will do the work. Its owner appeared during a July City Council meeting and told the Council his company could get the hotel removed in 30 days. With necessary environmental protections for air, water and ground.
Cost for the first phase is expected to be around a million dollars with a contingency buffer included.

New Bryant Field Baseball Team: Use of field includes major upgrades
Thursday, November 21, 2024. 4:35 PM
A scoreboard that could cost $250,000 is one of the upgrades a new Bryant Field professional baseball team would be expected to provide as part of a proposal to be voted on by Marysville City Council members at a special meeting Friday.
The team would be responsible for other improvements, including padding around the outfield, and upgrades to other parts of Marysville‘s long time baseball park.
If approved, the team would become the Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers, moving from Davis.
The High Wheelers won the 2024 Pioneer League Championship this summer, playing against 11 other teams in California, Utah, Idaho and Montana. It’s a new team, with an inaugural season record of 58 wins, 44 losses.
The Pioneer league dates to 1939 and is a Major League Baseball partner league. The High Wheelers would be a “year round” operation, according to the council agenda document. It says the team is “committed to being an active part of the Yuba-Sutter community, working with local businesses on concessions, providing free community activities, and organizing youth baseball workshops.”
Increased economic activity is a benefit the City cites. It says the new team will contribute around $67,200 annually in in-kind services, and assume responsibilities for field maintenance, facility repairs, and event security. The City will reimburse the team up to $250,000 from the General Fund for agreed-upon capital improvements. The City will get fifty cents a ticket to fund the reimbursements.
The proposal comes on the heels of to unsuccessful seasons by the Pecos League Marysville Drakes, unsuccessful in that they failed to generate enough ticket sales to continue.
Yuba-Sutter.LIVE will cover the meeting, scheduled for a 3 PM start at Marysville City hall. Watch on Live Streaming YS and YouTube.com/@Yuba-SutterLIVE

Marysville Hotel Demolition Planned: Special Friday meeting to approve contract
Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024 4:20 PM
The Hotel Marysville will be demolished in phases by the use of “high reach equipment long arm excavators with grapple thumb and material processors” according to proposals on a special Marysville City Council meeting agenda. The 3 PM Friday meeting at City Hall contains proposals from several companies.
The City Public Works Director recommends hiring JM Environmental, which outlined a phased approach ranging from removing just the top floor, to demolishing the entire hotel, with various debris disposal options.
Top floor removal may run a million dollars. Other phases would cost more.
The City’s intent is to get Hwy. 70 and E Street’s north bound lanes re-opened as soon as possible. JM Environmental says it can do the work in 30 days. Some time is needed to obtain permits before demolition would start.

Renaming the Sutter Buttes didn't get a thumbs up or down at today's California Committee on Geographic Names Meeting in Sacramento. The request to change "Sutter Buttes" to "Sacred Buttes" was on the agenda as part of item 6: Name Proposals Deferred for Future CACGN Review and Decision.
The agenda item notes: "Outreach and research for the name proposals below is still ongoing. No decisions will be made regarding the following proposals at this time. As such, committee review and formal public comments for these items will occur during later CACGN meetings. If you wish to comment on any of the below items, you may do so during the general public comment period and/or you may contact cacgn@resources.ca.gov."
We monitored the meeting Zoom feed, and there were no public comments about any of the proposals, including renaming the Sutter Buttes.
The next CAGAN meetings when the Sutter Buttes may be on the agenda are Friday, February 28 and Friday, May 30, 2025.
Details about the California Committee on Geographic Names and links to meetings are here:

A thank you to another of our newer sponsors, Denise Landis at Edible Memories Bakery in Historic Marysville CA. She whips up great cakes, pastries, cookies, cupcakes and other delights... along with coffee beverages! Here's something I whipped up for her... with pictures from when I was in this morning! MMMM! Please drop in this week and tell her you saw the video on Yuba-Sutter.LIVE's Facebook page, and it was too tempting to resist.

The Yuba City Unified Schools 2025-26 student attendance calendars are ready for school trustee approval Tuesday night.

The draft policy defines what “mobile devices” are, regulates when they cannot be used, and under what conditions they can be used, can be confiscated, and searched.

* 5:30 PM: Marysville Unified School Trustees Regular Meeting (May still be in progress on a separate stream)
SEE AGENDA LINK FOR DETAILS:
Jami Larson is retiring from the Director of College and Careers post she’s held. That’s effective December 30. She’s 53.
On Tuesday’s MJUSD agenda…
East Linda Middle School. It’s proposed for a 50-acre site on the south side of Hammonton Smartsville Road, across from Trevor Drive and some new subdivisions. Back in 2012, that site was proposed as replacement for Alicia Intermediate School, which was demolished in 2011. But the district didn’t have—and still doesn’t have—the money to build. Tuesday’s action would hire an architect to create Educational Specifications that are required for State site approval. They weren’t part of the 2012 submission. This new work is part of requesting hardship construction funds from the state. The 2012 plans were for a 1,168 student middle school, a 460 student alternative high school, 100 student adult education center and school, with education support facilities, a full sized soccer field, softball fields, a track, and other multiuse fields with lighting. As the number of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students has increased in recent years, the district has been expanding some Kindergarten through Fifth Grade elementary schools to handle K through Eight… in what was to be a temporary situation. A recent bond election failed, and the district is pursuing state hardship money.
